Honouliuli 10th Anniversary Celebration
‘On February 24, 2015, President Barack Obama established Honouliuli as a unit of the National Park System when he signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring it a National Monument. This act confirmed Honouliuli's historical significance not only to Hawaiʻi but also to our nation, and ensured its preservation moving forward. It also paved the way for Honouliuli's re-designation from a National Monument to a National Historic Site by President Donald J. Trump under the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act of 2019 (Page 133, Stat. 741-742), further cementing the need to bring Honouliuli's history to the community and assure its protection for future generations.
Honouliuli tells the story of martial law, incarceration, and prisoners of war in Hawaiʻi during World War II. Join us this year in commemorating 10 years of working together to preserve and honor the history of Honouliuli National Historic Site.
Over 50 partners are joining NPS for this anniversary celebration. Our Speaker Series this year is titled Hidden Histories: The Untold Stories of Honouliuli where each month, NPS will focus on a theme related to Honouliuli where our partners will share their expertise via in-person and virtual activities and events. Together, we will connect this powerful history to today's communities.’
